VAN DREW ISSUES STATEMENT ON SUPREME COURT PROTECTING RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

June 27, 2022 — Congressman Van Drew issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision in Kennedy v. Bremerton School District, finding that religious liberties are protected by the First Amendment of our Constitution.

“Our Founding Fathers were clear in the creation of the Constitution of the United States that the government cannot encroach on an American’s ability to practice their religious freedom,” said Congressman Van Drew. “A high school football coach should not be reprimanded or blocked from quietly praying with students after games. The Supreme Court has made clear that personal religious observance is protected by the First Amendment and those liberties cannot be infringed upon.

“Religious freedom should not be a debate, it is a principle that our nation has relied on from the creation of our Constitution. The Free Exercise and Free Speech Clauses were created not to impose personal religious beliefs onto others, but rather to ensure that the government does not violate an individual’s ability to practice their own religion. This is a historic decision for our nation – the Supreme Court reaffirming that religious liberties cannot be attacked and that they will be protected.”
